Sightings of interest on Sibuya

An exciting one! A BROWN SNAKE-EAGLE (Circaetus cinereus) has been sighted recently on a regular basis by Mike, Chris and their guests while game driving Long Camp. As yet we don’t have a picture to publish for you because the conditions haven’t been ideal for photography lately but hopefully Chris will oblige soon! This bird, although a nomad, is way south of its usual range, so as soon as we have the visual proof, the serious “twitchers” in the area will be notified.

Not a common resident at SIBUYA, the buzzard-sized BOOTED EAGLE (Aquila pennatus) has been sighted regularly over the last couple of weeks by Mike and his guests.

An incredible sight was a flock of fourteen TRUMPETER HORNBILLS (Bycanistes bucinator), a couple of beautiful AFRICAN GREEN-PIGEONS (Treron calvus) and some KNYSNA TURACOS (LOURIES) (Tauraco corythaix) all clambering about in an enormous dense COMMON WILD FIG TREE (Ficus burkei) while feasting on ripe figs… what a bonus! At the moment there is an abundance of fruit around as the WILD OLIVE (Olea europaea, sub-species Africana) and a number of other trees are also providing plentiful food for fruit-loving birds. Great sightings are numerous at present.

Great excitement! A SPOTTED HYENA (Crocuta crocuta), which has not been a resident animal at SIBUYA, has appeared in pics taken at night by the RHINO WATCH CAMERAS. This “stranger” has been seen by Bryan and his guests during a late afternoon game drive and is apparently a rather tatty specimen as its missing an ear and the other one looks a bit tattered and torn… obviously the result of a fight!

A beautiful golden-yellow eyed AFRICAN SCOPS OWL (Otus senegalensis) was spotted by Chris and guests while out on late game drive…a very lucky sighting as they’re not common in our area.
